Solar energy utilisation: Current status and roll-out potential

چکیده

To meet the well-known energy transition challenge, a rapid shift from fossil fuels to broader exploitation of renewable sources is needed; solar represents most abundant and readily available resource amongst sources. This vision paper aims at shedding light on current knowledge emerging pathways for utilisation. Specifically, after general introduction brief overview knowledge, open issues are discussed regarding photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) collectors, building integrated (BIPV/T) systems, concentrating power plants, thermochemistry, solar-driven water distillation, thermal storage technologies. Subsequentially, this article defines key fundamental challenges that need be addressed these technologies play significant role in future sustainable systems. The identified include developing new materials, enhanced performance, accelerated system installation improved manufacturing processes, combining with other clean production integrating utilisation local patterns.
